Some guys have complained about the quality of the construction over at AAAC: http://askandyaboutclothes.com/forum...ad.php?t=74845 But I may still try a SBL bag eventually. I wish the 14" bags didn't have such an extreme depth (9", if I remember correctly).

I bought one of the light tobacco brown 14" "briefcases" over the summer and like it a lot. Its definitely a very casual look (although that should be obvious just from the pictures) and the construction isn't as refined looking as on some bags but the quality does seem to be good to me. I haven't noticed any loose or fraying stitching or anything like that.
I too was worried about the fact that its 9" deep but it hasn't bothered me in practice. I think the fact that its narrow at the top helps. Also as the leather breaks in it doesn't take up that full 9" unless you fill it up.

Great quality black leather doesn't look much different from cheap black leather, especially in a casual bag like this, where you aren't going to try to put a shine on it, as with shoes. Black leather isn't going to look any better with age, either. Much of the charm of the SBL bags is in the complex "antiquing" effects that the light- and dark-brown colors will develop with use and age (see the photos in my original post for examples). Moreover, the black color just doesn't seem to jibe with the rugged design of the SBL briefcases -- it's no accident, I think, that the website has few photos of black bags.

Ok, I received my chestnut messenger yesterday. One substantial mofo, if I may say so myself. Looked it over, could not see any stitching or leather flaws but construction is indeed rather rustic. Now, has a single compartment inside which makes organising things difficult (see "impossible") but looks fantastic.
Heavy, too (in a good way). Has a definite air of ruggedness to it, and feels like it could take a lot of abuse.

Can anyone who has it post a picture of them wearing it with their approx height...
I'm having trouble deciding if I would rather go 14 or 16". I'm 6' ~200lbs. I would use it definitely for travel, but I think I would like to use it for a daily bag too. 14" laptop some books odds and ends
The gadgeteer link shows a very petite woman with a smaller bag so it's hard for me to get an idea on someone more my size. I think the 16 bag may be more fitted for my size, but may be too much for an everday bag and for what I need to carry in it...

i have a large tobacco brown one...with a laptop, some text books and other odds and ends the bag is pretty damn heavy to haul around for anything longer than walking from class to class. other than that it's good...but this was definitely a form over function buy that i kinda regretted.
