A keener eye would also have caught Spongebob Squarepants straining to keep the speaker cables off the floor (and free of static electricity).
I caught it. But you beat me to it.

These are KT-90s, not SET (but look very similar). I usually run them in triode at 25 watts/per, and can switch them to 50 watts.

Actually, I have hooked these up to one of the 300-based Cary SETs and they sound wonderful, but run out of juice at any level above, say, 80-85 db. The Shearwaters are a friendly load, but not very efficient. (and I often listen to big orchestral stuff with a lot of bass energy)

Some tweaks make sense to me, others not. I did an intensive listening session with three other golden-ears, and we agreed that there was a better sound with cables up off the floor. Not scientific, I know, but it was hard to ignore.

These are my new Audio Technica ATH-ESW9. They are portable and sound simply fantastic. They are made in Japan out of African Paduak wood with lambskin earpads. They benefit from amping but are easily driven by a portable player. They cost me a fairly reasonable $279 at AC Gears in NYC.

Opinions on the looks? Worth reviving an old thread? If anyone is interested in more on the sound please let me know.

Are they really that portable? The look about the size of a regular pair of cans.

Here ya go. I got the pic from the 26 page thread on these at head-fi.org. These don't fold small but fold flat. Here's another pic of them I liked next to the more affordable and also stunning ATH-ES7.

Just picked up a pair of the Ultimate Ears Super.fi Pro 5 in black. A gift for my girl that I will enjoy as well; these will be the first pair of non-crappy high-end headphones I've ever purchased. I did quite a bit of reading so hopefully they pan out.

I'm a big fan of Grado headphones due to their comfort and transparency and very accurate midrange, except for a small bump in the 2-5K presence range. I use them on my recording work and at home and I have an SR80 for traveling with the iPod.

Do you like that Grado's are made in Brooklyn?

Yes. I had the SR60 for a while. I really liked them but I needed a closed headphone so I switched to the Denon AH-D1000.
