You are right of course: There is nothing wrong with wearing this for Germans - just like there is nothing wrong with Americans wearing white sheets with pointy, matching hats. Perfectly acceptable.
I think a lot of Germans were raised to believe that too much cultural pride was a direct link to bad things in the past so many would associate something like this with nazism.
