both designed by gerald genta, i believe. the RO is not a conventionally handsome watch (especially the offshore line) but it has a distinctive and influential look: the octagonal design, the screws on the bezel, etc. Jay-z wears RO which may or may not affect your decision-making. but it still remains a prestigious watch from a pretigious house.

The first generation Ingenieur was not designed by Genta, and looks nothing like the current iteration. The second (or third, depending on how you're counting) was designed by Genta, shortly after the Royal Oak. That watch ceased production many years ago. The current-generation Ingenieur is heavily reminscent of the Genta design, but not the same.

It's Constantin. And I completely disagree by the way. It is pretty obvious to me that the Royal Oak is a better design than the Overseas. I'm not talking about the RO Offshore or some of the recent monstrosities Ã la Montoya, but the classic AP RO.

+1. The Vach is more pleasing aesthetically. It has more balance. The Overseas bracelet is probably the nicest on the market.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I never use to like the Royal Oak, but it has grown on me recently.The other two I'm debating between are:
Patek Nautilus (ref. 5800, mid size),

and a Rolex Datejust:

From a price/value perspective, the Rolex seems to make the most sense. But since I already own a GMT, I'd like to get something different.

I dislike the Royal Oak bracelets but the Overseas bracelet is much worse IMO - that sort of branding just looks too contrived.

On a strap, I think it's a nice looking watch.

Be sure to check out both watches in person (re: the Rolex and Patek). IMO, Patek's sport offerings always seemed to be an afterthought.

I was never that impressed with the VC overseas bracelet/lug design. The first link after the lugs sits over my wrist and is really not comfortable for anyone with a smallish (<6.5") wrist. Finish and construction are both top notch. In my experience, my favorite bracelets are from the IWC Pilot line, Blancpain X-50, and, surprise, the Ulysse Nardin Marine Line. The latter features a titantium caseback that is both hypoallergenic and a poor conductor (poor conduction meaning the watch never "feels hot or cold" to the initial touch).

iammatt generally has better taste than me, but he is wrong in thinking that the Vacheron Overseas is nicer than the Royal Oak. The Royal Oak is better looking.

But if wanted a steel sports watch, I would probably buy a Rolex if I could find a nice dial without a fluted bezel and that damned cyclops.

But in any case, I am happy with what I have for as long as I have it.

None of the sport watches offered by the assorted high-end manufacturers--Patek, etc.--are attractive in my opinion.
