I agree it's not a beauty, but the proportions are rather nice.

What makes you think I haven't seen one (or a dozen)?

The interior, especially at the back seat, is much nicer than the Mercedes. I would never drive it personally, but riding in it is a pleasure that I've not found surpassed by any current standard car.

It is pretty ugly, though, and has some unfortunate associations.

We were down in Los Gatos the other day and stopped in at the Bentley, Rolls and other exotic car dealer there. Being pretty much the epicenter of internet fortunes, these are "affordable transportation" in this local. From photos, I disliked the Rolls. I didn't like the heavy look, the armored car style and departure from tradition. But, when you see one in person, sit in it, open and close the doors, I have to tell you, it is a whole different experience! They are simply amazing.

Like any luxury item, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But see one, and sit in one before making a final decision.

As far as I'm concerned, it won't exceed the Mercedes 600, the car of dictators and plutocrats alike:

The old ones or the new one?

The new one isn't worth speaking about.
I'm talking about the new one made by BMW. I think it has some good things like the ride quality and the classical interior design, however the grille styling is terrible, so no self-respecting businessman or politician will ever buy one. Most plutocrats are buying the Maybach 57 or the 62. I think that the 62 is the best deal from all the options in the super luxury market.

No they aren't. Have you seen Maybach's sales figures? They are horrible! MBUSA just cut back more than 50% of its Maybach dealers.

By your comment, of course. It is an incredibly massive car. Note that I may be wrong, but Mercedes was the farthest thing from my mind when I first caught glimpse of the Phantom.

The grille was described by someone as resembling upmarket kitchenware.

The grille is impressive. It generates strong reactions. It's a love or hate grille.
