No, it's not just you. But people don't drive, they merely traverse. The fact that driving has had all the aesthetic enjoyment removed from it has rendered it an experience merely to be 'gotten over with' and minimized (see, cellphones) to the greatest degree possible.
Therefore, people have lost the sense of what it is that they are doing. Combine that with the U.S.'s general malaise and lack of any realistic magnitudes placed upon....anything, and you get a horror. I have a 1.78 mile commute, yet I live in the country surrounded by farms. It is awesome and I'm grateful. I do, however, like to drive.
