STP Sizes

Hey guys,

I wear a size 46 jacket. I know that makes me a Euro 56, but I notice that STP sometimes lists Euro 58 as the US 46 equivalent, although they often also list 56 as the US 46 equivalent. It's not consistent from sportcoat to sportcoat, even within the same designer (I've been drooling all over the Isaias on offer).

I know there are differences in cut between Euro-destined goods and US-destined goods. Are these sizing inconsistencies a reflection of the fact that European-cut jackets are going to fit more snugly than their US-marketed counterparts?

The inconsistent sizing equivalent listings have made me gunshy about buying anything.

With the return policy of STP, why fret? Make sure the suit you're interested in has both sizes that might work available -- order one and ship it back if it doesn't work. You'll be out $15... or you can order both if your credit allows and return the one that doesn't work for an immediate refund. I've returned items for different sizes and the customer service will give you the same discounted or coupon price for the new size as your original purchase.

(Unless you can try on the exact model, you're pretty much guessing; even with the same manufacturer, different models will give obviously different fits.)

Yes, it's going to vary by company. I'm a 46 and depending on the maker I might take a 56, 58 or even 60 (extreme) in an Italian suit.

STP does try to give good advice so I'd listen to them, and if it's a big ticket item with big savings just order two options on the assumption you'd return one. I just did this with a pair of shoes and am happy I did. I'm out 10 bucks...so what.

Be wary of Italian suits sizing. The STP advice is spot on from my own experiences of purchases of Italian suits. I am a USA/UK 44 and take EUR56. A EUR54 is closer to a biggish 42/43UK/USA - it is not ever US/UK44!

Isaia runs slim so I think that is a good conversion.

European jacket sizing is easy to convert to American sizing, but few people know how it is figured. Jackets and tops are sized by one-half of the chest measurement, in centimeters. Thus, an American size 42 jacket (42 inches chest circumference) roughly equates to a European size 52 (104 centimeter chest circumference / 2 = 52.)
