Cigarette Lighters.

What is your favorite lighter design? I think mine is the Dunhill Rollagas.

However, I've owned a number of old Dunhill lighters, and some of them have just been tedious: solid sterling Unique; two '70s Rollagas; a gunmetal Sylph. They never worked or leaked. I also used to have a '30s solid sterling ribbed Cartier lighter which while nice, didn't exactly work that well either. I suppose the S.T.Duponts are also rather pleasing, but they are too rectangular for my tastes, reminds me of cigar lighters.

Dunhill makes exquisite lighters. I happen to love the DuPont X-tends and own 3 but I am primarily a cigar smoker.

I have several Duponts. I know they are more cigar lighters, but I used them when I used to smoke cigarettes too. Can`t beat the *ping* sound when you open the lid on some of the better Dupont lighters.

My wife just bought me a Porsche Design model P3633 to light my occasional Cuban. (Way to go, Val!). It looks like two, flat black AA size batteries side by side with titanium accents. Very modern, very Porsche Design and it feels great in the hand or slipping into the pocket. I'm a pretty traditional guy and can appreciate a classic Dunhill any day. But, I must say I've taken a fancy to this hot honey.

I know a guy who has one of the largest lighter collections in the world. The lighters are all mostly quality lighters, like Dunhill and Cartier. After spending several hours at his house going over all of them, this is the type of lighter I like the best. This is an okay example, but he has better. This one is currently on EBAY.

This is a cheap Elgin, but nice.

I remember a Tom Waits observation, during his '99/'00 tours, that in big cities everybody likes really small cigarette lighters, while in really, really small towns they like really huge lighters, likening them to Encyclopaedie Brittanica, shooting flames 130 feet high.

Cigarette lighters have also become the victims of marketing with unnecessary limited editions of suspect taste and high prices aimed at collector-fondlers.

Of course, this may partly be fueled by the fact that smoking has waned in popularity and thus without gimmicky diversification, these premium lighter companies would go out of business.

On a tangent, I also see a lot of fake Duponts as opposed to Dunhills. Some of the fake Duponts are very well-done, I think.

My collector friend also has something I couldn't find a photo of, the Cartier watch/lighter. He has quite a few, they're all different.

I wonder if anyone still hand fabricates a custom lighter?

Mine is the size of an encyclopaedia, and I live in the city.

I've only ever used a zippo, and that was only because I got the snap-light on the first try. I've been a fan ever since. Outside of that I might use matches for the occasional stogie.

I've seen those before, very beautiful. Some of them were also enameled.
