The fashion tastes of "emerging" nations is so interesting. I've seen this evolve in my native Korea, and I also see it in Russia recently. People who are rich now, whose parents certainly weren't rich at all.

Absolutely correct. Want garish bling? Visit Saudi Arabia. If your phone is six months old, smaller than a brick, and doesn't make you breakfast, then it is sooooooooo old and nobody can understand why in the world you still have it.

Did you get the chance to eat at L'Auberge or Bernardus Lodge while there?

That's okay.

What Russian men lack in style, Russian women make up in stunning beauty.

These people are properly termed nouveau riche. I just call them plebs.

There was a healthy fashion industry in pre-Revolutionary Russia. This book deals mostly with women's fashion but there are a couple of well dress aristocratic gentlemen in there too.

Indeed, Czarist Russia had a fascinating luxury market, with huge desire for French goods. The aristocrats even compelled Cartier to open up a shop in Russia.

In fact aristocratic Russians usually spoke French to one another. I believe Puskin had to teach himself Russian, as he was raised on French.
