I have been looking at alot of posts and noticed quite a few guys sporting Tie Bar/clip. I was under the impression that they were passe. I personally like the look but want to get the forums opinion.

This is something of a recurring topic if you look through the archives. My personal opinion is that they can look good and complete a look, but they can also look very bad.

I happen to be wearing one today, but didn't initially plan to do so... it just felt "right" to add it when I looked in the mirror before leaving the house and perceived something to be "missing" from the overall effect.

So I think they have a value despite not wearing them regularly.

But take my opinion with a pinch of salt, because I also felt motivated to add a sprig of lavender to the lapel as I walked back home for lunch.

You can just see the tie-bar visible below:

Spig of lavender - yes!
Pocket square - yes!
Tie bar - no thanks!
In my opinion, it looks anti-sprezzatura.
But it may just be me, because I used to use them to avoid my tie from getting into the soup when eating, and I stopped using them once I had acquired the relevant eating skills.

I should have had soup for lunch, for an excuse for wearing the tie clip.

Actually HOLDFAST your pic in the "what are you wearing today" thread is one of the pics that prompted me to ask. I think it looks fine in your outfit but just usually equate it to a 50' and then again an 80's look.

Some would say I am a bit stuck in the 80s in terms of my colour choices too (note the pastel tie), but I figure I always did like Miami Vice.

far too repressed for my tastes.

The fashion mags said they were back a couple years ago, and they weren't. I don't think there's any reason to think they're back now.

It's not back. It survives among a small remnant of people who like it. When we die, it will die.

I agree with some of this, in that I don't think they're "back," rather that they never really went away--among the group you identify. However, I doubt very much that they will die when that group does. Tie bars do add a small visual effect that some people find appealing, and, since they don't destroy ties the way that tie tacks do, I think that they'll continue to be seen (albeit in small numbers, perhaps, unless they really are back) as long as ties are worn. Maybe that's what will die (wearing ties at all), perhaps along with suits!

In or out, back or not, I like them.

They look fussy, IMO, and not rakish at any angle.

I love the look but can't seem to find any that don't feature random presidential insignia or fly fishing material. WTF? Where can a conservative yet ageless vintage tie bar be found? In NYC, particularly?

If J Crew is selling them now (rather a nice, simple, sterling silver one), then I think it means they're back.

Or maybe we can wait until they don't sell any, and they sell them at huge discount.

I believe charles tyrwhitt has them in basic sterling. Presumably any of the better department stores and/or larger jewelry stores would also.
