On an Italian website today there are some interesting photos of their version of Edward G. Robinson whose name was Pasquale Gennano. Here are some pictures of mafiosi through the years as treated in Italian and American cinema: Gennano:

i love all the looks, even Pesci's Coochie-Collar. Casino is probably the most over the top but still a lot of fun.

Okay, not to be a nitpicker or anything, but I thought Edward G. Robinson was born Emanuel Goldenberg in Bucharest, Romania. Pasquale Gennano looks like an altogether entirely different person. His Little Caesar showed such great style, but like Myrna Loy he had such an exotic look that he could portray virtually anybody. I recently watched a movie from the 1930s where EGR played (convincingly for the time) a Chinese man from San Francisco.
I personally find the Mafia look veers too extremely from Sicilian austere--all black and white--to American roccoco. At one time I was quite intrigued by the collars Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro wore in Mean Streets, but then I saw them for what they likely were--a combination of momentary fashion and what fell off the truck. The main problem with Mafia style, I think, is that it is too concerned with projecting power and authority. I prefer people to play a bit against type.

Right, I jsut meant that like Robinson was the prototypical mafioso in America, Gennano was the prototypical Guappo in Italy. They were obviously not the same person, but played the same role in the cinematic world.
