flat front pants

i just purchased a new suit and it is my first suit without pleats, and i was curious, what is the rule when it comes to getting the pants hemmed, do i have them hemmed with a cuff or without? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is that a rule or just an opinion? Just curious... I tend to like cuffs on all my dress and suit pants.

Flat fronts without cuffs is more common, but if there were unbreakable rules in dress, we'd have no fashion. Wear what you like. That's the one rule. Wear what you like, and f'em if someone else doesn't like it.

I would not cuff them - it would look strange IMHO and ruin the sleek look of them. There is a 'rule' (for what it's worth) that says thou shalt not cuff flat fronts, but then again there are other contrasting axioms and rules:

- Pleated pants are dressier than flat fronts
- Tuxedo pants should be flat front
- Cuffs were (supposedly) 'invented' to shield the pants from mud - this implies a sporty outdoorish use

Dude, those are huge.

Really, if you're going to wear flat-front pants, keep them uncuffed, and get your tailor to sew a strip of canvas at the bottom (on the inside, naturally) to add some weight. If you really must put cuffs on them, and this should be only if they're not slim, then get normal-sized cuffs.

To the original poster, IMO, cuffs on pants are purely preference. Most people go with no cuff on plain front pants, and cuffs on pleated pants, but I don't believe there's really a rule. That being said, I think really narrow bottoms or really wide bottoms, look better with no cuff. Anything inbetween is up to you.

i have Ermengildo Zegna suit, it has pleat, I did 2 inch cuff.  Absolutly stunning.  I should have done 2.5inch.  It is more fashion forward.  1.25 - 1.5 cuffs are too business like.  Every guys have that cuffs, I do not feel like I should look like average guys.

If I was more than 6 feet tall (I am 5'10&quot and had long legs, I would definetly do 3 inch cuff.

When I saw Prez of Kiton, he was wearing a suit and had about 3 inch cuff. Yes, It was huge, I say he was about 6'1" or 6'2". It looked odd initially, but it looked really cool after 5min of stare.

But really, personally, I would not do cuffs on no pleat pants.  But if you really like cuffs, I say go big (thats me..)

Flat front trousers look much better with no cuffs. Actually, to me, they look quite odd with cuffs.

This would indeed make quite a statement. I can't say that I recommend it. I agree with the consensus: no cuffs with flat front trousers. The lack of excess cloth at the top should be harmonized with a lack of excess cloth at the bottoms.

Cuffs on flat fronts are definitely a (not at all conservative) fashion statement, so if you are going that direction, go really big - it's going to draw attention anyway, especially if the pants are slim. That being said, unless the pants were herringbone salt-and-pepper twead, or some other really interesting material, I would personally go with no cuffs.

for what its worth, i just bought my first suit with flat front also. my extremely strong preference is for cuffs with dressy pants. the salesperson (whose opinion i trust and who i often use) told me that i really, really should have plain bottoms....but if i absolutely had to cuff them i should have at least a 2 inch cuff.

For years I've been getting J. Press suits (which have plain-front trousers) with 1 5/8" cuffs. On 10-12 oz mid-weight suits, they look very good indeed. You'll find it common that Press cuffs trousers, and Press is a conservative store.
