Fortunately, in California they only have to deal with the wet. A double sole handles that reasonably well. Not as good as cordovan, but OK.

Those appear to be zippered Chelsea boots. I distinctly remembering the Bond villain, Blofeld, wearing those.

Those are my pair. I just picked them up from the Post Office. I like the hooks which are usually invisible under the trousers. However, they make it a lot easier to put on and take off the boots.

The contrasting coloured uppers are quite traditional. The EG Midnight looks bluish in the picture due to the flash but in real life they are more like a dark blue-grey to slate colour. I chose it because EG don't carry a grey leather and this was the closest I found to it in the swatch book I perused at the Jermyn St store.

I am very tempted to order another pair with a black suede upper - maybe in the 82 last.

Very nice, Manton. I am half suprised to see someone still makes a boot like that. Ive seen some pictures of my grand dad wearing an almost identical pair with his day-time formal getup. Nothing inelegant about that.

Here are some pictures of my pair of Shannons. I chose Midnight Navy for the uppers as a substitute for the traditional grey colour such as in this example from JL St James:

All along I had planned to polish the uppers with a coat of black shoe polish to make them look even more greyish. Before (photo by Leather Soul Hawaii):

After:

The contrast looks even more subtle in natural light (I have used flash) and when the uppers are better concealed underneath trouser hems. They are made on the 202 last in D width. I strongly recommend that anyone planning to order a pair stick with the hooks rather than eyelets as it makes it immeasurably easier to put on and take off the boots.

Nice. The more I think about it, the more I convince myself that a two-tone Shannon in Burnt Pine and Coffee Suede or Nutmeg Suede would look very nice.

I think dark oak willow calf and dark oak calf would be the true connoisseur's choice. Wing cap de rigueur.

Sounds like a winning combination.

I'm a fuddy-duudy, I suppose. One color/hide is all I can visualize on any given shoe, not a single Colonial in the collection.

I have hardly ever seen historical examples of Oxford boots with matching coloured tops. An Oxford boot with a lighter coloured upper is no Colonial or spectator - it is just traditional. In fact, I would go so far as to say that is how an Oxford boot should be.

I'm sure the historians are on your side, and that the boot police would have their way with me, but my Shannons (and all other Oxford boots) will be one mono-hide.

My Shannons ordered in January are just now being shipped. I suppose this is typical for EG. Anyway, these will be mono-antique olive. Will post if they ever arrive.

Yes, a modified 82, where they widened the outside part of the right boot near the small toe to accomodate my less than ideal foot.
