Tailoring ties to skinny

Hi Guys,

Was reading the latest GQ and apparently the "instant upgrade for June" is to have your tailor alter your regular ties to skinny...say 3.5" to 2.5". I franky didn't know this was possible.

Anyone have this done? If so, any comments on cost and result?

Thanks!

I've done it myself, and the results were good. I don't know if a normal tailor would be interested in doing it, because it's very easy to damage the silk while working with it. But Tiecrafters in NYC will do it for $14 each, which is reasonable IMO for the amount of work required:

Be aware what you're 'upgrading' to. 2.5" is pretty severe, perfectly suitable for a Huey Lewis & the News video, though.

Not for us very skinny types. 'Normal' ties look ridiculous on me.

Nice...thanks for the link. How skinny did you go?

Yep...3.5" doesn't look good on a skinny guy like me also. Maybe going to 3" is the safe way to go...but would it be worth it then just taking off 0.5"? hmm...

If you want your tie to be versatile -- appropriate even for conservative business dress occasions, that is -- I wouldn't suggest going below 3". I'm skinny and prefer a 3-3.25" tie. Anything greater than 3.5, like all the 3.75s in the stores these days, look ridiculous on me.

It's the pink Faconnable - I took it down from ~3.75 to about 3". You can see the old creases on the back side - I didn't want to risk messing up the silk trying to get them completely out.

That's impressively clean, j. I haven't the skill to perform such operations and will probably give away the 3.75s I've been handed down rather than mutilate them.

Thanks.. it wasn't really that difficult, but like I said you do have to be very careful, at least I did with that one because the silk is really delicate and it would be easy to ruin it. I definitely think $14 is fair for that job.

This is slightly off-topic, but where do you guys measure the width of the tie? At its widest point?

So the job wasn't completely perfect?
