Thom Browne trying too hard...

My apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but I just ran across this slideshow of the recent Met Costume Gala and this pic of Thom Browne (in case it doesn't post the pic, but just the whole slideshow, Thom is pic no. 28):

I never personally liked the "too small" aesthetic, but in the beginning I still appreciated that Thom was trying something different. Now, though, it just seems like maybe he's trying too hard...

There are some other interesting pics in there, some hits and (I think we will agree) a lot of misses.

I think he looks great. How is he trying too hard? That is his style.

Not my taste, either. But Mr. B. has affected a flow and balance to his offbeat ensemble. It has been thought out. Might not be pleasing to many an 'eye,' but in my honest opinion, he looks way better than when Tom Ford affects a 'too tight' silhouette minus any semblance of invention or balance. Just make it too tight. That's not what's happening with Mr. Browne's look.
Seems like now, Tom Ford is affecting topheavy. Christopher Bailey makes Thom Browne look like a paragon style. JMHO, of course.

I know that other than to a few of us the basic attitude is to not care what women might think about the way you dress. That being said, why would anybody wear clothing that would almost prohibit you from ever getting laid. Thom Browne as worn by himself and here by SoCal seems to be the almost perfect cock-blocker.

I'm curious if Thom Browne's dark reign extends beyond a select community in New York. His look clearly doesn't have legs, much less exposed ankles, in Melbourne at all but here in the antipodes we tend to be behind the curve in such matters. More crucially is how much influence he has in the US, does he have any? I suspect not. I can't help get the impression he's some kind of self-propelled joke that has excellent publicity and just enough of a market (although at his prices, he only needs a few dozen customers) to survive. I've seen other such wacko looks that have been confined to small decidedly leader-orientated clique before and they never ever last for very long. Oddly enough, the most annoying part of his look I find is his haircut. edit : go back a few pictures and WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE is Lapo Elkann wearing?

It's a matter of distribution. He is only in a few retailers in the U.S. and a couple in Japan. In Europe there is Colette and I want to say 10 Corso Como as well. For example, the best Thom Browne customer of Bergdorf Goodman has never been in the store and lives in Chicago and has half the collection shipped out to him.

As per influence...he is doing the Brooks Brothers Black Fleece debut, won the CFDA Designer of the Year award, was the previous creative director of Club Monaco, is doing a line of men's jewelry/watches with Harry Winston.

Thom did the suits for the movie Stay I believe.

I don't care what celebrities wear and it doesn't influence me at all; but, for the sake of the matter I know Matt Dillon (who stole my suit from me at Ron Herman!!), Elton John's man, David Bowie and maybe one or two others that I recall seeing but can't name have been photographed or purchase Thom Browne.

I think SOcal wears TB in the TB-style nicely...it fits him properly, and the high water is his deliberate decision to wear the trousers in the TB aesthetic

me, I wore it like I'd wear any of my other suits, with a no break trouser length
