I didn't know of that one. +1 on my list. Tonight's commute home - lots of electronica this time. 1. Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel. One of those songs where the video is more impressive than the song, although it's still good. Why does Gabriel always sound angsty, even in a love song like this? 2. Easy Girls - Les Negresses Verte. These guys defy classification; they are all over the shop. This is one of their more mellow numbers; personally I prefer them uptempo. 3. Absolute Beginners - The Jam. I'm not one of those Jam fans who hate their later, more produced stuff, but this one does nothing for me. 4. Condemnation - Depeche Mode. Pedestrian DM; doesn't do much for me. 5. Got No Love - The Kooks. It's confirmed; I like this album. 6. Stop Don't Panic - Jamiroquai. Despite my rep here as a JK fan, I'm not that into him. My iPod needs a cull, is all. 7. I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea - Elvis Costello. This is the first EC song I can remember hearing. I think Declan has it all over every other contender as the best Irish songwriter of the last couple of decades. 8. Ponytail Girl - Color Theory. Billed as a "Depeche Mode tribute". Sounds a bit like the poppier DM stuff, without being too imitative. 9. Cash Machine - Hard-Fi. Another of the young Brit bands I'm into. I really like this album. Good and bratty. 10. Setting Son - Chemical Brothers. Liam Gallagher's singing works very well with the Brothers' crashing percussive electronica. At least he seems to have checked his ego at the studio door. 11. We Can Get Together - Icehouse. Their first single, way back when they were still called Flowers and Iva Davies was just a callow youth. A nice bit of 80s rock that wears quite well today. It makes me feel really old now. 12. Thank You - Dido (Deep Dish remix). Eminem's total re-invention of this song on Stan was brilliant, and this brooding remix is not far behind. The soppy original by Dido (or marital aid as Ali G called her) is way behind. 13. Devil - Stereophonics. Welshman Kelly Jones has a great rock voice, but this one sounds a lot more contrived and forced than their best songs. 14. Puzzle With a Piece Missing - Gotye. This album is up against Augie March for the best Australian album of last year. Terrific electropop, with a bit of a Specials feel in the intro. 15. The Bitterest Pill - The Jam. One of their later numbers that I do like, if not the absolute best (that's Beat Surrender). 16. Midnight Creeper - Eagles of Death Metal. A nice antidote to all of the electronica. I absolutely love these guys - A+ for attitude. 17. Surf's Up Tonight - Midnight Oil. A mellow contemplative song from their earlier period before they honed their political edge. Doesn't set the pulse racing like good Oils should. 18. Chance - Big Country. Guilty pleasure department. I still like them after all these years, and it's sad that Stuart Adamson drank himself to death. I could have used a few more decades of his rueful ballads like this one.

Breathe is a cool, mellow album - but far from their "early" period considering they had only 2 albums that followed it up. And as much as I like the Clashy-pub rock of the first few albums, Capricornia is my all-time fave.

1. Rammstein - Weisses Fleisch. Their standard snarly noise. Who knows what it means, but it's great.
2. Love is a Long Road - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Yes,, the old iPod does need a cull.
3. So What - Miles Davis. Incomparable.
4. Fed and Watered - Josh Pyke. Australia's newest hot songwriter. The album is called Memories and Dust. Buy it immediately.
5. Famille Heureuse - Les Negresses Verte. They never fail to pick me up.
6. Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz. Still like it, after all these years. Wish I'd gone to their concert at the Warfield in SF when I had the chance.
7. Five Easy Pieces - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Still getting into their new album, so I'm ambivalent about this atmospheric slowie.
8. Saturday Morning - Eels. One of E's better ones, which means very good indeed.
9. The Specialist - Interpol. Not one of their stand-outs.
10. Graceland - Paul Simon. Some of the lyrics make me wince in pain, but the tune is as infectious as Ebola.
