Todays random twenty party shuffle:

Surrender- Cheap Trick: Great start!
Friendship- Sloan: Getting kind of bored of Sloan.
Sixteen Blue- Replacements: Classic!
Superabound- Frank Black: Frank Black stuff is hit or miss but this album Teenager of the Year was good.
Judy Is a Dick Slap- Belle & Sebastian: Getting a little bored of them as well, but not enough to take them off the iPod just yet.
Charlemagne in Sweatpants- The Hold Steady: Not completely sold on this band but a few of the tunes are working for me.
Carolina- Josh Rouse: Just getting in to this guy recently but I like it so far.
Swirling- Robyn Hitchcock: Loved him years ago, haven't heard anything he has put out in more than a decade. Quirky good stuff.
Hi-Fi- M. Ward: Loving M. Ward!
I've Been Around- Peter Zaremba's Love Delegation: Great CD from the singer of the Fleshtones; mostly covers.
He's A Dick- Golden Smog: Great alt-country supergroup from mid-90's. Outstanding CD. If you like Jayjawks, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, etc. Check this out.
Green Onions- Georgie Fame: Fun.
Manta Ray- Pixies: Great track. It was a b-side but is album-worthy.
Let It Be- Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nice cover.
Glorious- The Breeders: Blast from the past!
Homosapien- Pete Shelley: Another blast from the past!
Alex Chilton- Replacements, The- One of their best.
falling for you- Weezer- Meh.
And No More Shall We Part- Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- perfect Nick Cave...i love his really melodramatic stuff.
What You Want- My Bloody Valentine: this band gets a lot of props around here. I like them...but they are not in the god-worthy category.
Dig For Fire- Pixies: I have too much Pixies on my iPod.

4. Dire Straits - Twisting by the Pool
5. The Reels - Bad Moon Rising (another great cover)
6. Mr Jigga - Rival Hams

My commute home tonight ...

  1. Drive - The Cars. There's a coincidence - I've come to prefer Strawpeople's version now
  2. Glamour Profession - Steely Dan. Possibly the smoothest drug song ever
  3. The New Pollution - Beck. One of my favourites from him
  4. Feel Good - Phats and Small. OK dance music in the Gnarls Barkley mode, but the lyrics are too repetitive
  5. Seaside - The Kooks. Still getting into this album. All good so far.
  6. Coracao Tambor - Ian Pooley. A Cafe del Mar classic. I never tire of Rosanna's glowing Portuguese vocals
  7. Howl - Black Rebel Motorcyle Club. Great song off a great album
  8. Upon this Tidal Wave of Young Blood - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Love the title, love the song. Except the bit where he endlessly repeats the phrase "child stars". I can't wait for that bit to be over
  9. Hercules - Midnight Oil. One of their lesser songs. IOW, better than most Aussie rock going. So sad that Peter Garrett donned a suit, went into politics and lost all his relevance.
  10. Bartender - Dave Matthews Band. Not my favourite DMB song. I prefer to hear more of Boyd Tinsley than we get here.
  11. Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio - Ramones. There are no bad Ramones songs, and the less good ones are over soon. This one is OK.
  12. Butterfly on a Wheel - Sisters of Mercy. I really like the melodrama of these guys' power ballads
  13. Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu - Robin Alciatore. I didn't realise this was on here. Seemed to belong on this list, right after SoM
  14. Black Eyed Dog - Nick Drake. In retrospect, a hauntingly prophetic song. Listening to Drake always makes me sad at the premature loss of such a talent.
  15. Fancy - Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They've done better than this, including on this album.
  16. Mercury Skies (Trance Mix) - John B / Paul Oakenfold. A nice bit of doof-doof electronica to finish off.

I would not only agree but say that they are definitley overrated. I had Loveless probably around 94, 95.... ended up selling it, I just never felt like listening to it. There were others that just did better what I was looking for and their shoegazey-easy-listening-noise style did not appeal to me that much in the end.

And again +1 on Cave. One of the very few artists who do what could be termed as conventional music that not only I can stand but actually like. "Murder ballads" is still my favourite (I found that beautiful little digipack edition that looked like a storybook years ago back home...)

Yea...Murder Ballads is a great one. I got the Grinderman yesterday but only had time for a quick scanning. Sounds good so far. Thanks to you and California Dreaming for mentioning it.

+1 on Murder Ballads.

Alter, I'm glad you like Augie March. I feel a bit sorry for the OS brigade who have missed out on One Crowded Hour. What a fantastic song it is. They have another beautiful ballad they did a few years ago called Asleep in Perfection, that you might try out.

My iPod random 10 for today -

  1. Love Is - American Music Club. Love this album, mostly. Intelligent balladeering a la Sufjan Stevens, but the songs are more complex.
  2. Disco 2000 - Pulp. Great, great song. Only Jarvis Cocker could make Laura Branigan music sound cool.
  3. Shout to the Top - Style Council. All right! Takes me back to the clubs of the 80s, where this was an instant floor-filler.
  4. Matchbox - The Kooks. Still on the money with the solid working-class rock on this album. I think it's destined for high rotation. I think it's more even than the Arctic Monkeys album.
  5. Generation - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. From their earlier harder-rocking phase. Quite like Raveonettes or J&M Chain.
  6. Martin Eden - The Twilight Singers. Mmmm. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person in Australia who gets Greg Dulli. Nobody else seems to like this.
  7. Mister Blume - Odd Modern. Terrific electronica, a lot like one of my antipodean favourites, Strawpeople. And best of all, it was free (thanks for the tip TS).
  8. Save Me - k.d.lang. I'm not that into Katherine as much anymore, but it's nice occasionally.
  9. You Don't Love Me - The Kooks. Told you this was destined for high rotation
    smile.gif

  10. Tender is the Night (The Long Fidelity) - The Triffids. A great Australian band, sorely missed. David McComb was one of our best songwriters.
