^^ outfit was for my cousins wedding. Tie wasnt necessary but it was an outdoor summer wedding in a park and i think it ending up working well for the situation.
Honestly, i was kinda against the tie in the first place and didnt really like it because it was hideously wide.. But i let my gf and mom talk me into wearing it if could be narrowed (its almost the same dimension as a j. crew tie now).
fwiw i got ALOT of compliments on the tie and how well the colors of it went with the dress my gf wore (this was not intentional, really)

why should a tie only be worn with a suit/jacket?
why are other non-functional accessories permitted?

The tie is cool. Although it would have been cooler had there been another piece with some brighter detailing to round out it out. Mahogany shoes or wristband or something like that.

Ties without suit jackets are fine, especially when they're purple and sparkley.

How about ties and shorts? Ties and DRs? Ties have a place and that place is inside a suit or sport coat. (Unless the new wave 80's are back and I missed the memo.)

Ties look gay if they're inside a sportcoat but aren't part of a suit. IMGO.

I don't often wear a tie and when I do, mostly with a suit, but I sometimes like the look. If it looks gay or not, I don't really know. The danger is, I think, that it can look choir boy or senior citizen.

Tie without a jacket is the supermarket manager look, though I guess it can be done right as well, like most things that look wrong in most cases can be done right in some cases.

IMGO.
