The Official 2007 MLB Thread

I will start off this thread for the whole season. I was browsing MSN the other day and came across a power ranking for all the MLB teams this season and the writer had the TIgers at #6? He had the Yankess at #1. Why are they #1 when we kicked their ass in the playoffs and got Sheffield and made it to the WS. That writer is a dope. There is no doubt the AL Centrail is by far the toughest division with the Tigers, Twins, Chisox, and the Indians.

I saw that as well, kind of silly. Phillies and Cardinals have the teams to take them all the way to the WS. I also think the Diamondbacks could break out this year.

I am expecting the Phillies to come out of the NL at the end of the season and meet my Tigers in the WS.

I'm not convinced that the Tigers will be able to pull off what they accomplished last year. Their young staff will be the key, it should be exciting to watch unfold.

Are you guys serious with your Phils predictions? As a lifelong Phillies fan, I urge you to reconsider. Not only are they quite possibly not that great at their best, they're already suffering significant injuries, Pat Burrell's slump has a slump, and Ryan Howard hasn't been able to hit a softball.

I'm hopeful, and nothing counts until opening day, but I'm not optimistic.

He probably ranked the Tigers 6th precisely because they are in the AL Central. They have to play the Twins, Chisox, and Indians 19 times each. Everyone seems to have a different take on who the best team in the Central will be. For some it's the Tigers, for some the Indians, and for some the Chisox. Whatever, the case, it'll be a dogfight in that division.

The Yankees, meanwhile, have the toughest lineup in baseball from top to bottom, and their relief pitching is solid. Their starting pitching is the only question mark, but even then it's not a disaster by any means. They still need to contend with the Red Sox (I'm a Sox fan), who arguably have better starting pitching, but a weaker pen and lineup (and defense). The Blue Jays will be in the mix, too, but after that it's the Orioles (pathetic) and the Devil Rays (up and coming, but still a few years away).

Nomo once pitched a no-hitter for the Red Sox. I've always said that I've been a Sox fan through both the Clemens era and the Pedro era and, in that time, two no hitters have been thrown by Sox pitchers - one by Hideo Nomo and one by Derek Lowe.

yeah, nomo is an interesting phenomenon. one of the worst and best pitchers ever. perfect at times, horrible at others. i hope daisuke will be more consistent. also, as always, i'm interested to see how ichiro does this year (born and raised in seattle

)

What happened to the Yankess tough lineup in the playoffs? They always have the best lineup and can't seem to get it done. I think they are loosing some of the luster.

No one enjoys seeing the Yankees fall flat on their faces more than me, and I agree that they didn't do much in last year's playoffs. However, they did win the AL East for the umpteenth time in a row. In ranking the teams before the first game has even been played, I don't see how you could ignore the Yankees as one of the elite teams in baseball right now.

From everything I've read, the Tigers should do very well in a very tough division this year. However, you can't discount that they're going to be playing a lot of games against some extremely tough opposition.

I was all set to bash your Philly praise, but you know, it's the NL, the whole league is pretty much wide open.
Despite Pat Gillick's best attempt, the Phils aren't that bad, they're 6 deep with unspectacular starting pitchers and I guess that counts for something.

Plus, half the Met's are over 35 and they only got older over the offseason.
