Movies that clearly show how New York used to be (?)

I'm 30 yrs old and never even visited NYC before 2000. For you old timers, how was it, really? I'm really interested in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, before it was Giulianid, before air conditioning, before gentrification, etc...

Probably the most striking images in my mind are from Taxi Driver. His purported routes are insane. All the latent and overt racism, violence at every corner, drugs, Appreciation theaters look ******* awesome. I think where all the hookers hang out is supposed to be LES or alphabet city - is that how it was?

I read somewhere that Woody Pediphallen's Manhattan was supposed to be a great depiction of the city, but it was just bleh...

Are there other good movies that how it really was? Midnight Cowboy? Do any ring false?

Marathon Man
Death Wish
The Wolfen (great for the south bronx of the eighties)
Laws of Gravity (pre-gentrified williamsburg and greenpoint)

As mentioned, After Hours is a great depiction of soho in the early eighties.

mmmKids. Not so much a pre-gentriied NYC, but a gentrifying one.

In the 80's I used to go to Ranger games with my dad, people would be shooting up and smoking weed in the stairwells. Fights galore, especially if you were wearing a rivals tee or hat (people didn't wear jerseys back then).
