You really shouldn't be eating from fast food joints in the first place, regardless of how much you like it.

Unless you're drunk, then by all means, partake.

you can get the whole onion grilled. they can even cook the burger with mustard so the mustard flavor cooks into the meat

If you're way OCD about carbs, then you can lettuce wrap your patties. Also you can customize your meat to cheese ratio - largest I've seen is a 4x4 (as in four patties, four slices of cheese... one for each chamber of the heart!) Flying Dutchman is just meat and cheese. In a wrapper. Grilled Cheese Animal style fries Well done or undercooked french fries Chopped chili peppers on your burger Root Beer Floats Neopolitan Shakes *Edit - Five Guys is way better anyways...

Just kidding. Anyway . . . the problem is not with In-N-Out, but the hype that surrounds it. Like SField said, the business model and the consistency in light of what it is (a fast food restaurant) impresses me as well.

had in-n-out in vegas, and it was meh...my friend looked at me like i had three heads when i didn't drop my goo from the first bite, but it wasn't anything i would go out of my way for.

5 guys is perfect when your hung over, but i'm not a fan when sober.

5 Guys isn't bad per se but are people really comparing apples with apples? When people think of 5 are they picturing a simple burger ala Out or are they imaging the bacon, mushrooms, jalepeños, bbq, a1, relish, etc?

Yes, exactly. In n Out is the best fast food burger if you want your simple American (tm) burger, or a simple burger with the onions for animal style. Five Guys is a better option if you want a burger with a bunch of toppings or a more "custom" burger. But regardless of my love for the double double animal style, In n Out's fries are ******* atrocious.

In-N-Out and 5 Guys are totally different types of burgers.

In-N-Out is a much better version of a McDonald's style of burger. Harris Ranch meat, fresh vegetables, quick, fast and cheap.

5 Guys is like a faster version of Fuddrucker's. It's like a sit down restaurant burger in a fast food place.

It just depends on what you want at the time.

My experience from:

In-N-Out: San Diego; Las Vegas (consistent good experience)
Five Guys: MA; Portland, ME (the one in Portland really sucked and felt overpriced)
Sonic: San Diego; Peabody, MA
Fatburger: Vancouver, BC (really expensive for what it was)

Also a shoutout to Vera's Burgers in Vancouver. It's a great local chain.

I was this close to just calling 5 Fuddrucker's. It's true.
