Best looking buildings in the world

4. Eiffel Tower

I think the most famous U.S. buildings are the White House, Golden Gate Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and the World Trade Center, but I don't know if any are among the top 10 in the world. St. Peters, the Duomo, St. Basil, the Forbidden City, Sydney Opera House, the Pantheon, and some others are in the mix.

One thing about the World Trade Centre is the how they are viewed from an architectural standpoint. After 9/11 they've been called beautiful, inspiring, etc. And from a symbolic standpoint now; yeah, I agree. They do mean a lot, and the images are incredibly powerful.
But no offense, I always thought they were ugly things.

They were. There's a really good chapter in an otherwise crappy book that is devoted to how they represent everything that is wrong with architecture. It's worth a read.

I'd definitely count the Sydney Opera House as one of the world's most beautiful buildings. In terms of recognizability, I'd be surprised if it weren't ahead of the Colosseum and Parthenon.
