Yeah, can't wait to actually see that done in the TV show. Will be brutal, the outrage from fans over Ned's death has been pretty huge so this event... yeah.
Just finished Book 3:
Beric passed along the "fire" inside him that was responsible for his continued reanimation to Catelyn.
Did I miss that? Can you tell where to find that in the book? All I remember is Nymeria finding her and dragging her out of the river. I don't remember any mention of her after that.
I don't believe it's stated explicitly, but the disappearance of Beric (and Thoros?) leads me to believe that is the case. Beric was tired of "living" after being killed so many times, and so he gave his magical fire-life to Catelyn.
There's really no need to develop his character much past this point. He'll be gone by the middle of S2
