Lunch today, what to eat when it is pushing 100 out

This is 20 bucks worth at Franklin's BBQ. I think I ruined myself. I have been all set to hate the place: long lines, stupid "sold out" sign every day, lots of local press, skinny white guy with hipster glasses, etc. Drove by there today with a buddy about 12:45, only a couple of people in line outside the door (more line inside). No sign up, yet. Pulled in and did the "doofus in line" number.

That food was Goo-ood!
The photo is of two 2-meat plates, brisket and ribs. Really tender, just the right amount of fat. What's his secret? Not sure, but: ribs were definitely "rubbed" with lots of pepper, and? Possible hint of a vinegar marinade? Not sure, didn't ask. BBQ isn't usually marinated around here, but wtf, whatever he does, it is tender. My buddy said he thought the "secret" was that he started with better than average meat. Don't know, but buddy is a cattleman, so, maybe so.
Anyway, my verdict: I'll still eat other places, I hate lines and I like several of the old places around here. But: Franklin's is more than allright in my book, even if he does look like he just dropped out of grad-school! Damn fine BBQ. -S.

Ironworks is the best I've tried in town. The best are outside of town and really worth the trip. Go to Lockhart and eat just about anywhere. Also, Scheopf's is in Belton right off the highway and has the best pork chop you will ever eat.

Yeah in fairness I live in Dallas, so I can't pretend to be an expert on local Austin food.

BTW, if anyone ever wants to try the best in D/FW, it's Main Street BBQ in Bedford. A bit off the beaten path for out of towners but worth it.

Since nobody seemed to mention Chuy's for Mexican in and around Austin, I had to speak up. Really good steak burrito, about the size of a newborn elephant.

LOL! They sure do seem to have a LOT of people fooled. Only been a couple of times but it's always been jam freakin' packed.

****- better stop calling my cousin Chuy, then.

For BBQ- within city limits, Franklin. In the area- I hear Snow's is the **** but I've never had a chance to get up there. I do relish any opportunity to get down to Lockhart and partake.. SF Meetup in Lockhart!

As for the best mexican in town. I'm pretty sure that's me.

My favorite mexican restaurant in Austin. I haven't lived there in 10 years, but I used to be a regular at the Sunday brunch.

Couldn't wait, ended up going here for lunch today. Had to wait in line for about 25 min I'd say, but man the brisket was just amazing. Has been a very sleepy afternoon for me and the two others that went here in the office as a result.

Chuy's is a huge chain. You might as well say On the Border.

BTW, if you come to Dallas and want really good Mexican food, Cafe San Miguel is awesome.

definitely enough tourists/college kids to keep it going....

i'd love it if i were in high school, but now that i know what real food tastes like, it just doesn't do it for me. the free salsa/queso bar did save ****** quite a few times in my early 20s, though.

The only thing I can forgive Chuy's for is the flan. Everything else kinda sucks.

Anyone remember/know the name of the little Mexican place downtown close to the river? Been ages since I was there...it wasn't too big, walking distance to the Marriott. I thought it was close to a bridge of some kind where a ton of bats hang out during part of the year(?) It had outdoor seating and I remember you had to walk down some steps to get there. Kind of a hole in the wall IIRC.
