Put a PS and avoid a crisp white shirt , they might think you're a waiter or maitre d'hotel...

Love the gingham shirt idea. Pink would be best, but a light blue would work too.

Black suits are panned roundly here, but I was just in Paris and I they seem to be all the rage and chic, thin Parisians pull them off with aplomb. A dash of color is necessary. Keep it buttoned (only one button if you're a total noob, assuming it's a two-button suit). Keep it slim and perfectly tailored.

Coloured shirt, pocket square and bright tie - will look good. There is absolutely no reason to wear a white shirt.

You're running in to the real problem with a black suit as your main suit - its difficult to dress up and down. Throwing out entirely whether it is conservative or appropriate, it is not nearly as flexible as greys and blues.

But that is beside the point for you, since that's what you've got. +1 on the pink gingham.

The only acceptable way to liven up a black suit is to bleach it white.

Has anyone here ever worn light brown shoes with a black suit? I've heard that people do that in Italy.

I would want Luca's suit only if I had his body dimensions, too.

Besides, it's nicely fitted but purely fashionable (color, jacket too short). It's quite a good choice for the 50th suit in anyone's closet.

I would aim for something like Prince Charles's fantastic silk pocket square here.

I've hardly ever seen a man look so at home in a tux, unlike William with his brogues, travolta-esque trousers, stuffy white pocket square, and rather oversize jacket.

Btw, Charles's FC looks fantastic, how would I instruct my tailor to make my cuffs this way? And what kind of cuff links would I need?

Go with the earlier suggestion: pink gingham shirt and white ps. that's it. HOWEVER, get some nice shoes....
(And after the wedding, get yourself a blue suit, a can of gasoline and some matches(for the black suit!)
