Balthazar

I'm skeptical of people trying to show up small-towners with big-city extravagence. In all likelihood they probably don't care about whatever spectacle you've got planned for them. Give them a good atmosphere.

yea i see your point. Balthazar is probably my favorite place in the city, it's just so ******* classic. the menu is kind of tough for my guests, but you're making me reconsider. actually Tao and Balthazar were the first two places i went to in New York in my youth, and clearly they both made a good impression. (i had good hosts and want to return the favor in some way...)

thx for all the ideas guys, i will have a lot to meditate on. all the stuff i'm missing living out in the burbs ...

I like it and I think that it serves finely prepared food that people not used to michelin style dining would find accessible. I think it's the type of place that acts as a great gateway to better food. Far from the only place like this... would also recommend Barbuto.
