Anyone have any experience with El Cortez? On a whim I ordered a bottle of the 21yr from my favorite online wine and liquor purveyor. Not the most expensive bottle of all time, but certainly not cheap, especially for rum.

1. El Dorado 12 Year Old from Guyana (nice notes of anise and smooth, long finish) - $23.99
2. Saint James Royal Ambre Rhum Agricole from Martinique (the same funky terroir of Hor's d'Age but at less than 50% of the cost) - $21.99
3. Flor de Cana Gold 4 year from Nicaragua (under priced for what it is) - $15.99
4. Pampero Ron Anejo Especial from Venezuala (a little harsh burn, but typical of South American rums) - $16.99
5. Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum from St. Croix (yea, I drink spiced rum neat - you got a problem wit dat?) - $12.99

Interesting selections. I've never tried, or seen for that matter, the Saint James. I have tried the Pampero anniversario, not the especial, and for the sampe price, like a few other options better. Again, never seen the especial before. I'm sworn to never drink Cruzan or Patron so I can't tell you about that one. But, yes, its a little weird.

+1 on Havana Club, the 7 year is around $8USD if you pick it up in Cuba. I remember reading some customs forms on my way back to the states and I think it is perfectly legal to bring back (at most) 2 bottles of rum and 4 cigars, or something small-time like that.

jsut becaue it hard to get or becaue it is good? honestly there are alot better rums avaible that you can easily get... even than there are far better cuban rums.

No one asked, but here are my two least favorite rums (for drinking neat - I'm sure they get better with mixers, but what's the point?):

a. Olo Brazilian Spiced Rum (incredibly harsh and unpleasant, dirty dishwater taste and nose) - $17.99
b. Appleton Estate V/X from Jamaica (way out of balance and sour, but everyone agrees it makes a great mixer with Coke) - $12US/L at Duty free shop in Mo Bay airport
