In 1968 I used to hitch-hike a lot and people used to mention that they picked me up because I had 'nice short hair'. That was until late 1969 when I suddnely couldn't get a lift for love or money!

I think I read in The Soul Stylists something to the effect that mods didn't wear their strides short and skinheads did. I recall that mods did wear their trousers short in order that they hung right (I've said this before), and I had been looking for the pic below of a mini-mod with his strides at half mast to prove the point. Okay so they're not hanging brilliantly but they're not round his ankles.

If you look at early Photos of the Small Faces, you will see that Mods did in fact wear their Trousers short. Also the picture of Rod Stewart shows that as well.

But not break-yer-neck short

(Why did Kenny Jones always strike such camp poses?)

I still think Marriott looked better in a whistle than Rod.

[Baldry had to wear double-breasted jackets or he would have looked like a bloody pipe-cleaner]

I've mentioned this before, but shorter trousers were fashionable (even in the mainstream) in the late '60's. That long trousers trailing on the floor look of nowadays looks awful! Even if a suit is smart, trousers touching your shoes just makes them hang badly: it's the first thing I notice about old photographs - how much smarter the trousers look for being short.

Rod's bouffant is quite horrific.

I think you've developed rather a taste for that!
