agreed.

my parents fully expected I would graduate college (which isn't very difficult) and go to grad school shortly thereafter.

A degree with no college debt. I can't imagine how I could expect anything else on top of that.

I didn't expect anything for college graduation, but got it anyway.

I don't remember getting anything for my PhD, but I sure as hell didn't expect anything. I'll report back in a few weeks about my wife, her parents LOOOOVE giving crazy ******* gifts (five figure wedding present) so I imagine she'll get something bonkers for her PhD.

Do you find it's common for most PhDs that get married to end up with other PhDs as well?

Well, I mostly know younger PhDs, and then established ones in their 40-50s. The younger ones are almost exclusively with other high performers (MDs, lawyers, PhDs, etc), simply because of the demands of the lifestyle. It's hard to explain to someone with a normal job why you need to roll back out to the lab at midnight. I can't say about the people who get married to someone they met after grad school, because I haven't seen it happen yet

The older generation (my boss, etc) seem to be married mostly to saints.
