Strobe to her left at a 45 degree angle and aperture around f8 or so? Sorry - I'm now getting into lighting so I try to analyse pics to see if I can figure out the set up.

Yeah, strobe camera left about 45 deg, about 4ft from the model. I shot this at f14, 1/200th/sec in order to kill some of the ambient light and overpower the sun. Remember shutter speed controls ambient and aperture controls flash. I was going to use my 64" PLM but the wind was blowing at like 20mph so that would've been a nightmare. Ended up just shooting bare bulb then did a lot of dodging and burning in photoshop to smoothen the light and skin tones.

I've heard this before and taken it to mean that you should be adjusting the shutter speed for the ambient light in the scene and your aperture for the light that will be coming from the flash. Is that a correct interpretation?

Yeah basically. Read up on the Strobist 101 if you haven't already, it explains everything about off camera lighting. http://strobist.blogspot.com/

Thank you. I'm guessing there was some sharpening, and the colours seem very expressive. I like the picture by the way. Just interested how a PS advocate changes his work.

lol sorry i thought you meant the building before it was remodeled! Duh, yeah the picture was shot in raw then i messed with the RGB curve a bit instead of the whole dodge and burn, i shot the picture warm to begin with so that helped make things a little more speedy post processing..then added a cool filter to give it bluer highlights in the sky. Yes there was a bit of sharpening not much because the lens is pretty tack sharp. Thanks!
