Hey guys,

I'm looking at an SC with the following measurements. Is it closer to a 38R or 39R?

Chest 21,
Shoulders 18,
L 30.5
Sleeves unfinished

Hard to tell. 18" shoulders are pretty much spot on for a 38, but 41" chest is on the high side. My guess is that it's a full-fitting 38.

18 inch shoulders are definitely closer to a 38. Most companies add 2-3 inches to the chest size for their measurements. If this were a 40, it would be a narrow shouldered and small chested 40 (as it is only 1 inch larger).

My vote: 38

edit- I'm trying to understand where the question is coming from. If you've found measurements and want to know if it will fit you. I'd say judge by the measurements over sizing? Personally, I'd look at measurements before a stated size. However, after telling Vittorio that the sport coat he sent me was .5 inches off in the shoulders according to his measurement, he told me it wasn't his error and that I shouldn't go by measurements so closely... who knows. However, if you're generally new to sizing, measure your chest. The companies SHOULD be making the coats to fit the size to the measured size of your chest. Therefore, a 40 inch chest should wear a 40. However, we know this isn't always the case but I feel as not enough people have actually measured their chest before.

edit 2- Am I crazy or did it used to say 38 or 40 and now says 38 or 39? Now that it says 38 or 39, I think the difference is almost negligible. In this case, I'll say 39 just because I like the rule of adding 2 inches to the chest measurement even though odd number sizes aren't very common.
