Blog on Tipping

Larry Fox, a 20 year old designer and developer, has a side job making deliveries for Brooklyn restaurants. He's not satisfied with some of the gratuities he's received, so he's created the website 15 Percent to shame those who have screwed him and others out of their rightful remuneration. And he's posting the names and addresses of the allegedly lousy tippers, too.
A little overboard?

Posting names and addresses is definitely overboard. Being pissed off about the way most people tip delivery drivers is very understandable. But if he thought he'd make money delivering pizzas or whatever, he's an idiot.

I didn't read the blog but if the dude expects more than $2 or $3 for orders $20 or under, or if he expects more than $5 or $10 for super-large orders, he is marsupialed. Delivery does not equal being a waiter. Deal with it.

x a billion. Since when does a deliveryman get 15%? I admit I've never worked as a deliveryman but are deliverymen paid the lower "service personnel" minimum wage like waiters and waitresses?

Go back to the Learning Annex and take a typing course you over-entitled douche.

What I think is most insidious about this blog is that you only hear his side of the story. You know, if we order out and it gets there in 20 minutes, all nice and hot and the delivery person is nice, I have no problem giving between 10-15%. If it shows up 1.5 hours later and the box is ice cold? Forget the tip, unless folks in the house have the drunken munchies, it's getting sent back and the order cancelled.

I'd feel worse about having sold off my copy of A Confederacy of Dunces if I didn't have all the blogs to remind me of all the Ignatius J. Reillys out there.

Except anybody who has actually delivered knows that they don't.

I can only speak for the baristas out there, but I worked my way through undergrad as a barista and here’s the deal: $1 tip per drink is minimum. I grew up in the NW (Seattle/Portland) and when I moved out to the NE (Boston/NYC), I kept noticing that people don’t tip AT ALL??? I’m no longer in the service industry, but if I see you do this, I’m going to spill my latte on you and smile. Again, if you can’t afford the tip, don’t order your item.

What the **** is this ****? This is the problem we get when we have college-educated baristas.

I tip $1 at my normal coffee place around the corner, but if I'm just getting a drip coffee from some random place, sorry, not paying for the 2 seconds of work.

Delivery drivers get 10-15% usually though I don't get delivery all that much.
