My coworker is the most boring motherfucker I've ever met, talks in a Rambo monotone about how he loves his family and california, which he repeats several times an hour. Had to spend the whole weekend at a conference listening to this bullshit.

The GF is an incredible singer. One of the better ones in the state. Lots of awards. Her voice sounds crappy on the phone too. That said, I came to the same realization as you about 8 months ago. Download free recording software and sing small snippets (~10 seconds long) and them tweak and repeat. Eventually you'll find the sweet spot in your mouth and throat where it sounds rich. You'll then get a feel for how it feels and sounds, and you'll be able to tell when you're singing well. It may take a few sessions of a few hours to get it, but it works. Make sure that you practice a few times a week or you'll have to do it all over again.
