Why hasn't Jaime Lanister been captured and hung for murdering the king? I must have missed something.

He was pardoned by Robert.

And it was the previous king (if you weren't sure).

I don't think these are spoilers, but they explain why Jaime "Kingslayer" Lannister is still alive:

King Aerys Targaren was a madman who burned Ned's father and brother alive, in addition to many others. Then his son (Rhaegar) stole Lyanna Stark, who was betrothed to Robert. Rhaegar was Viserys and Dany's brother. These two things caused Ned, Rob, and Jon Arryn (the dead guy in the first episode) to rise in rebellion. Lannister claims to support the king, they are let inside the walls, then Twyin starts sacking the city on behalf of Robert. Jaime kills the old king, and thus, Robert's rebellion was successful. Because Twyin took Kings Landing, Robert marries Cersei Lannister, and obviously pardons Jaime

All of this is revealed in a Game of Thrones (the novel), but I don't think its a spoiler anyways.

Yeah not a spoiler. The spoiler is WHY jaime truly killed Aerys...cue dramatic music. Support the show and we might get to see this played out on the screen.

Because Aerys told him to kill Tywin? Or was there something more to it that I can't remember?
Edited Actual Spoiler:
Or was it because of Aerys setting up wildfire throughout the city and wanting to go out in a blaze of glory? Which is, quite possibly, still scattered throughout KL?

Very much so. It's sort of a central plotline.

I'm hoping this show doesn't get cancelled after the second season.

+1

Been getting really into the show, very good, but every week brings up sour grapes of my beloved Carnivale and Deadwood getting the axe. So, to stay true to myself and keep my boycott of HBO alive, I just loaded the novels into my Nook.

Jory Cassel handing Ned Starks letter to Jaime Lannister
"WTF don't do that!"

Then Jaime is too pissed off at Robert's whoring to take advantage of Jory's naivety
