If the guy is smart, he's probably been sitting on a finished manuscript for the last few years, since talks with HBO started. There's no reason to release until he has maximum exposure with the TV show and can work the tie-in.

I would agree if the series was not already a NYT bestseller. I imagine more people have stopped reading the books during the wait for the fifth than will be motivated to read them by the TV show.

Yes, the book is complete and still scheduled for July 12th release. I just hope the next book doesn't take another 6 years.

I just hope the book doesn't suck as hard as the last one. That thing was hard to finish. I kept flipping through the pages hoping the next POV would be a character I actually liked and it never was.

I seriously think Martin is just phoning it in now. His heart clearly isn't in writing the rest of the series, but the money is too good and his publisher would probably sue the everloving **** out of him if he doesn't crank out something. So he'll vomit out some crap, cash the fat royalty checks and go back to playing D&D or whatever it is that he does.

I didn't think Feast for Crows was bad, but I think his decision to split the book into two books, and in that particular way, hurt it. Each of the novels has had their weaker POVs (Samwell, early Dany, Sansa, Catelyn, etc) but for some reason GRRM decided to package the least-popular POVs into one book and deny his audience their favorites.

I expect Dance with Dragons will revive a lot of people's interest in the series when they finally get to see Jon, Tyrion, and co. again.

I don't think AFFC was bad either. It served a purpose, and had some really good plot surprises as well. Does it rank with ACoK or ASoS, hell no, but it's not bad.

Agreed, one of the biggest issues with the book was the fact that it was comprised of the b-list characters. I also think that the decision to split what was intended to be a single book into two was imperfect at best. Nonetheless, I stand by my assertion that Martin no longer seems to have a desire to continue. When he announced that he was releasing AFFC, he said the next one was half written, since he'd been putting it together with the intent of doing a single book. It still took, what, six years for him to finish?

In the meantime he's done a couple of Wild Card books, multiple side projects, done a couple of multi country tours and various other things. I don't begrudge the man having a life and other interests, I'm just saying that it doesn't seem like the project he started 17 years ago still inspires him. I think he's sort of dreading having to keep trudging through it for another decade, but the external pressures are too strong to blow off. As a result, the quality of the finished product is going to suffer.

Never read the books but watched the first two episodes. Similar to my expectations from what I've heard, but impressed me really, and I normally despise fantasy TV shows and movies. Looking forward to the next already.

I'd make a pun about her and a little finger, if it wouldn't imply I had a small penis.

Great lighting in this ep. Castle Black looked very grim.
