Really? I saw Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacting Jupiter through one of those telescopes, and wasn't disappointed at all.

Thanks to the inversion layer that traps smog over Los Angeles, Mount Wilson has naturally steadier air than any other location in North America, making it ideal for astronomy and in particular for interferometry.

The observatory is great. Nice building and views. They even have a Tesla coil.

There was a lot less light pollution in those days.
