Really? I saw Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacting Jupiter through one of those telescopes, and wasn't disappointed at all.
Thanks to the inversion layer that traps smog over Los Angeles, Mount Wilson has naturally steadier air than any other location in North America, making it ideal for astronomy and in particular for interferometry.
Not to mention the accomplishments of the nearby Mt. Wilson observatory, from which Hubble first viewed galaxies outside our own and determined that the universe was expanding.
What, you don't like strip malls or faux Mediterranean architecture?
