I'm with Lasttye when it comes to the yellow laces.

As for the shape of the toe, well mod brogues could be rounded or squared, but skinhead brogues were definitely wing-tips. If you're not worried too much about authenticity but would like a smart shoe at a reasonable price, why not just pop down to Clarks. I did.

Of course i agree about the yellow laces, was gonna get them with black laces. I already have several pairs of brogues, my favourites being Allen Edmond "McNeil" in burgundy.

the scarves aren't right either for Chelsea or the Toffees.

I knew they was not Chelsea, The Lads in the pic are far to scruffy.

The lads on the buses were indeed from north of Milton Keynes, which I don't think existed then. They had quite a snappy firm name for 1970 : The Clan.

MK was designated a 'New Town' in 1967. But anyhow, how did you come across the name 'The Clan'? This raises the question of whether they might be Scottish, or is that a red herring?

Never heard that one before-maybe Scottish then!

Lasttye is the most authentic. He is only only one wearing a tie, which was mandatory with a suit at the time.

Second left has a cravat. Never seen that before on skinheads.

Orange shirt was also too loud for a suit back in the day. Ditto check shirt.

In mitigation, cravat and check shirt both have interesting colour mohair suits.

I've always considered myself a bit of an Anglophile, but I'll admit I was completely ignorant of this subculture, especially its roots. I haven't read through the whole thread, but it sparked my interest to do some research on it outside of the forums. So thanks for that!

I always wear a tie with a suit, as you say Kingstonian it was mandatory back in the day.
My mate with the cravat had the suit made by Steven Purvis Glasgow.
The other lad in the Blue suit is wearing a Jump the Gun off the Peg.
My suit is POW Made from 70% Merino wool Mohair mix. Tailor George Harringay.

Present day Skinheads wear loud open neck Check shirts with their suits, Dont know how this came about, Is it a 79/80s thing ?
I have mentioned before, and spoken to present day skinheads that we would wear Plain or Striped shirts with our suits, and the tie. Checked shirts would be worn with Jeans or Sta Press etc
Cravats are worn by some present day skinheads, I also never saw this in the 60s W London.
Most skinheads on the present scene are 79/80s Skinheads, And i think the correct dress code is lost in time, Or maybe they dont want to dress like the Originals ?? Or its just evolved this way?
I am no expert on the later 79/80s/90s Skinheads, All i know is what we wore around West London late 60s,

Just to add, the last couple of Years many Originals are coming onto the scene, which is great, beats sitting at home getting old and feeling sorry for ones self Lol

Lasttye, is the suit collar of "Cravat" black velvet? I've never seen that on a skinhead suit before, only on an overcoat. And are those four lapel buttonholes on his left lapel? If he's gone to that trouble, how many buttons are on the sleeve?!

Correct with the button holes my mate decided when he had this suit made ..he wanted it to look different, I think he has seven cuff buttons, The velvet is dark blue. I never saw Velvet on collars in the 60s, I have seen on the present day scene Skinheads having loads of other pockets, I think they are just copying what they saw in the Nick Night book. Around West London in the 60s, we kept the suit simple, I never saw loads of pockets, My suits that i wear these days are the exact copy of what i wore as a Original.

South of The River we did wear suits with open-neck shirts, believe it or not. We've noticed in previous posts in this thread how things could be slightly different in various districts around London. The photo below shows myself and a mate with open-necked shirts and matching pocket-handkerchiefs.



When I said that the guys in the 'Doo' photo were sharp I meant it. I didn't mean that any or them were or weren't conforming to an 'original' style, just that they looked pretty decent.
