I guess they are actors now, but I thought they once had great stand up routines.

I hated him when he had original stuff. The fact that he's a hack makes it even better.

The next Carlos Mencia, I mean Ned Holnes, joke I laugh at will be the first.

romano is by no means a groundbreaking stand up, but i remember him not being noticably annoying. he really tones up the nasal and the whine for his TV show. Which is still a great show

Wanda Sykes is one of the only funny female comedians.
I like her as well; I just wish she could figure out how to make her Fox show funny. I really hoped it would pick up after a few episodes, but it just doesn't seem to be working very well. The ones who develop a whole "persona" or performance attitude that is largely staged don't really get me too much (like Leary.) But, of course, humor is one of the least universal aspects of human experience, so it's hard to expect anybody else to agree on what we find funny or why. Regardless, it's pretty hard to dislike Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Bill Hicks, etc. Sykes, to me, is "funny," but those guys were artists.

you don't have to wish it were true, because it IS true. it's cute that you think his popularity in your area has some sort of relation with his status as a hack, but it doesn't mean ****. he could sell out madison square garden for the rest of his life -- and he'll ALWAYS be a hack. if you want the proof go look for it. check youtube and google. you'll find countless pieces of evidence -- and a ton of established comics talking about how he's stolen. he is a hack. if you like carlos mencia, you probably just haven't been exposed to actually talented comedians. anways, i bumped this topic so i didn't have to start a new one. probably the best active comics right now IMO: louis CK lewis black bill burr jim gaffigan patton oswalt chappelle is the best comedian in the world right now.

Go watch the Jimmy Kimmel interview of Norm MacDonald. ******* brilliant, he is one of the best. He never lets Kimmel ask him a question the entire time. Watch all 4 parts.

Norm Macdonald is ******* awesome. Also, his tenure on SNL's Weekend Update, while considered a falure by Lorne Michaels, was brilliantly deadpan and subversive. He had a honeybadgeresque attitude about the job that really shone through.

One of the great things that he does is making everyone uncomfortable. He interrupts, has very tense body language, and even alters his breathing patterns. Dude is so good at altering the natural flow of conversation. You should really check out the interview.

Will do. And completely agree with your assessment. His entire style sort of is predicated on generating calculated awkwardness. In some ways, I think he picked up where Andy Kaufman left off. (Tom Green was often trumpeted as the modern Andy Kaufman, but Green didn't really "own" the shtick in quite the same way; he was too tongue-in-cheek about it, and you knew he was just being silly. With Kaufman, you never quite knew if he was running some routine or was genuinely insane, and he would take it through to, and beyond, its natural limits).

At any rate, I am convinced that pop cultural history will bear out that Norm was simply ahead of his time.

Absolutely.

I saw Norm intentionally bomb at some ****** roast a couple of years ago, and it still cracks me up. It was such a subversive dig at the entire institution of celebrity roasts. It was brilliant.
