Are herringbone suits really fuilly canvassed- just looks at lunch and most seemed to be fused.

Maybe they used to be or maybe I just picked the wrong ones?

Eh, I hate doing that kind of stuff. By all accounts it sounds like a size 8 in loakes (capital/026) is a size 8 in C&J (337).

If not, someone on here will get a good deal on some Belgraves.

I know what you mean. Faceless shop assistants in huge shops is one thing, but two guys that own their own shop is something else.

Especially when I know them. I did my PhD with Sebastian's nephew. Most of the time when I go in there I don't get out of there inside an hour without a detailed analysis of the latest Formula One race...or a discussion about neopolitan tailoring...or why he stocks English welted shoes as opposed to Italian ones.

I've been in there about six times over the past two years. He always says hello and gives me the time of day..and the only thing I've ever bought from them is a belt. Once I spent a late Friday evening after work trying on endless suit after endless suit (D'Avenza, Castagnia...the works). He knows I can't afford them...but he also knows I'm interested and I appreciate what he sells and where he is coming from. It was only a phone call from my tired and pregnant wife demanding to know where I was that stopped us...otherwise we could have been there all night.

So whilst I may be guilty of tire kicking at David Jones (or Henry Bucks, or Ralph Lauren...or even McClouds)...I can't do it at American Tailors.

Herringbone at the tops of Collins Street has C&J's too (unsure which last they are from)- presume the other stores do too.

I'm not sure if they fit your category of faceless corporation, but they are not the small operation that American Tailors are.

Yes I do - and can say pretty confidently the sizing is very similar between Loake and CJ, depending of course on comparing similar shape and style.[/quote]

+1 I have both and agree with you.

I thought most Herringbone suits are 1/2 canvassed (chest area only) these days. This is the case with the 2 I own anyway.

Previously they may have been fully canvassed?

While on the subject of Herringbone, what's the go with the jacket sizing length? I tried on a 40 today assuming that its a 40R, and noticed that it was rather on the short size. Do they not do longs?

During my lunchtime wanderings today, i called through Harrolds- i usually look at Paul Smith mainline stuff, because i quite like the style. I have never bought anything there though- too expensive for my tastes.

Anyway, the sales guy showed me a new line of "Harrolds" label suits. He said they are made by Caruso and they are fully canvassed (so same deal as RLBL etc). I tried a "french cut" one on and they apparently have an "english cut" style too- it was pretty nice.

The one i tried on was $1700 retail and hopefully they will drop a fair bit at Harrolds sale time??? But even at that price, they are one of the cheaper full canvassed suit options around from what i have seen. Worth a look if you are in deperate need of a suit at full retail price.

That's a really nice post. I think it's a privilege to encounter people like that on a semi social level. I know a couple of people in the food industry who have a similar passion and it's always a delight to speak to them about their business.

If I can interject with a quick Q: anyone know anything about 'Brando' shoes (allegedly they are made in Italy)? Would an SF member be seen dead in them?
