That's pretty nice. While the posting would be a slog, you'd surely get a little time off and if I were stuck in America with no great prospects, Australia would be a paradise. The weather is great, the girls look great, everybody has a good time, the only complaint is boredom from living on a heavily populated island paradise. I have friends and family who work in Mt Isa for Xstrata. They pay you well for living in the middle of nowhere but its a good start in life and you can leverage into management fairly easily as long as you can take the piss like an Australian can.

There were a couple of guys I played WoW with in a similar situation in Canada. If you want an idea of how exciting life is there, they basically worked, drank, and played WoW.Originally Posted by Piobaire

and lul at the Isa, I have a school friend who works there and went all in to buy a car on her meager salary just so she could drive back to Brisbane on the weekends, lol. Complains mercilessly about being stuck in Mt. Isa all week on facebook and its been 2 or 3 years.
About 3 or 4 years ago, had this thread been posted, I would've probably done it for sure. It's a dollar to work ratio that exceeds the negatives that most people with degree and without work experience can expect. Monk'ish lifestyle to save a bit of money, no need to waste money on styleforum-approved clothing...

I cannot offer any direct help. However I do believe there is some truth to the idea of labor shortages in Aussie Land. There have been similar articles for the last couple of years. One article I remember was about how the construction of the huge LNG export facilities was causing all of the world's welders to move down there. A number of the projects are on the outskirts of Hell though. It is pretty amazing to look at the $$$ size of some of these projects.
I would guess that the construction work is contracted out to the world wide construction firms such as Fluor, Brown and Roote, or Foster Wheeler. There are probably Aussie divisions of these firms as well as local firms of substantial size.

Anyone got a link to these oil rig jobs or OZ jobs that pay well?
Thinking of dropping out of college. Im not convinced that finishing my 4 year degree right now is the best option with my max out credit cards and drained savings. I want to find a decent paying full-time job to work a year or two and then return to college. Been applying locally for a full-time position for about 6 months now with no luck. I've gone to several interviews only to find out the positions pay minimum wage, have no benefits and its limited parttime. Applied at banks, retail stores, and manufacturing (for both management and non-management postions) I've got a 2 year degree too (no one really cares about that though), no one is willing to hire unless you'll work for the above wage. So im thinking it might be best to move to a different area thats less depressed. This is in the Midwest.

If you don't find anything else, electrical and plumbing both pay fairly well in the US. Starting out it isn't great, but you're still looking at ~$10/hour+benefits and available overtime.
I did a bit of research and it looks like starting is about $50k/year for roughnecks, so looking in to jobs on the gulf might work for you too if the Australian jobs don't go through.
