uh what? they're chinos... not jeans. It's not like he needs extra inseam for stacking...

also, I'm surprised at grit's comment about the top block. I sold mine awhile back because the thighs were too tight, but then I have decent size (though not huuge) thighs and even for me they weren't glued-on tight.

BTW, its just my opinion / could just be this particular pic... but Grit- you don't have "extremely skinny legs/thighs", more along the lines of normal build.

I think the fit pic on the Baron Wells chinos (as well as the Unises) shows why quarter-top pockets work better than side seam ones -- you always have some sort of flare, and it only gets worse as the pocket fabric stretches from repeatedly putting your hand in and taking it out. It's especially noticeable on slim fitting pants, in which you really want to have a clean line from waist to hem.

I only buy quarter-top pants (like EP's) now.

Judging from your post history, this clearly isn't your kinda place. Pants look fine. They are even a little long for chinos.

I've got a great pair of khaki waders with a great fit, but the material doesn't pucker and pull either. It's possible.

This is a good point. Does anyone know of a tailoring solution to mitigate the flare? Or are quarter-top pockets really the only way to go?

Sorry to hear that. Cotton On's quality is poor but they do have occasional blowout sales on selected item. Bought some tapered chinos reduced from $50 to $10 a few months ago. Best products = shorts. Avoid the t-shirts which are usually made of semi-transparent cotton.

grit, judging from how the waistband looks in that pic, you could (and IMO should) size up 1. Even slim chinos should have some slack in the top block or the pockets look strange. Otherwise you'd be better off getting 5 pocket pants.

I can't think of one. The other problem with side seam pockets is that stuff can fall out more easily. There is a reason that fine MC slacks are nearly universally quarter top.

I don't have a lot of "rules" for clothing, but "no side-seam pockets" is one that I won't break.

So I put the khaki-colored Baron Wells chinos up for sale in B&S, but I also got a navy pair and I love the color so I'm not giving up on them. I talked to my tailor and while there's no way to re-cut the pockets, I am going to take the waist out just a little in a way that might add enough room in the seat to avoid the flare. Don't know if I'm throwing good money after bad, but I figured it was worth the experiment, especially since I think it's a nice slim fit otherwise.
