Talking about regional differences. About ten years ago as a young impressionable professional at a very conservative Investment Bank I was instilled that wearing a shirt with breast pocket together with a suit was unacceptable. What is the view on this rule in different regions?

Thanks SF (a new me)

I feel safe with solid white or light blue. But if I want to spice it up a little, will Blue Bengal, POW or mini grid/graph ok? Also, can Lilac/Purple on similar patterns work or is it too busy and pushing beyond conservative business dress? Sorry gents no pics.

I really appreciate this thread and Thanks to all for your posts...

Maybe it's a matter of workplace culture, but I've never heard of anyone at my office being told how to dress. Actually just once - I overhead a female junior getting told to not wear sandals into the office (which she was going to change into heels).

That said, there's a high degree of homogeneity in men's clothes that you see here. Always worsted suits in dark solids or stripes (no windowpanes, plaids, flannels, etc), spread collar shirts (with no pocket, usually with french cuffs), silk ties (never seen a wool or knit), and cap toe oxfords in dark colors. Maybe we just hire the type of person that doesn't question authority or have a maverick streak.

Never heard word one about shirt pockets outside of clothing circles. I first learned that was a "dandy no-no" when I started visiting Jermyn Street in the early '90s.

Many thanks to Manton for starting this thread and to all that have contributed.
I haven't subscribed to a thread for a long time, but his one has me hooked.

What are you talking about? That's an excellent example of Manton's comment that cream is underated.

And it shows the right age group for cream.

I'll try. I'm wearing a multistripe shirt with more white than color, (and a PS and tie a bit too close in scale) so I feel I may be doomed...

I like the suit, dislike everything else.

BOOM! Could I get a bit more, though? Do you think the "everything else" is not conservative business dress, not to your taste, or both? My work doesn't require any of what I wear, much less conservative business dress, but I'm just trying to compare what is a fairly conservative look for me to your (and everyone else's) understanding of conservative business dress.

(It looks like o/o is having some fun in this thread, too...)

I don't like any of the pieces individually and together they are too busy and too matchy.

They are fine for business, no one would blink, except maybe at the square.
