Opinion on penny loafers

I haven't gotten into loafers yet. Perhaps I have to find the right pair. They are finding their place in my rotation wearing them without socks to the beach, run errands, pick up the mail, etc. Since they are so easy to put on and off, they make a nice convenience shoe.

The problem with loafers is that there is so much variety and that it seems to turn on relatively small differences. It is hard to find the right pair. The Alden shell does look good (as usual), but also looks a little business casual. The bass weejun is a classic, but for college kids. I've never really liked the casual venetians. The higher end loafers can be too dressy, without really working with a suit. I still think there must be a right pair out there, but I haven't tracked it down yet.

I view the loafer the same as the button down collar, good with a sport coat but not a suit.

I love penny loafers, but they have to be sleek with a high vamp. C&J does a couple models well. Nice and sleek. No inserted-pennies ever, and no tassels for me.
I think the biggest thing is, unless you have a BIG foot, you better be wearing slim/tapered trousers at the hem otherwise Penny loafers have a way of making themselves look really skinny/small on your foot.

Agree on the high vamp and sleek requirements. Most penny loafers do not meet either.
