You can drill out the snaps and replace them with black ones of the same size.

is it blasphemous to take a perfectly good pair of trousers and hem them as shorts?

Anonymity. Seems fairly self evident.

Yeah, or just anyone who can put snaps on something. For about $15 in tools (anvil and setter) and $4 in snaps (make sure you figure out if you need line 20 or line 24 snaps), you could even do it yourself.

The model looks like a friend of mine, aged about 10-20 years. Uncanny. Hopefully my friend would at least have the sense to wear eye protection in a machine shop, though.

You should be able to take a solid look at the pants and determine if they could be converted, and if they can -- I definitely see no problem with that. Especially if you can sew a hem or know someone who can. It's a good idea

Here is the thing - see how there are 4 pieces to that snap system? The rightmost one, I don't want to get rid of. It is fully matte black. I could also deal with the bit on the other side not being matte. The only snaps that actually kinda irk me are the ones on the body, the bits on the left side of your picture.
