I agree with all but 3. Properly done, and assuming we're not talking the full butterfly, I think a good bow tie is solidly conservative business dress.

Only if you work in an office with Atticus Finch. And even he didn't wear a bow tie.

Sorry gnatty, but I just can't imagine how a bow tie (however good or proper) is conservative business dress these days.

I think if that is a contrast collar shirt, then it is indeed bad. BAD. However, I think the square is nice as-is. The whole get-up could us a darker, more discreet tie.

EDIT: I may as well add: not generally a fan of two different color windowpanes/overchecks in one cloth.

I kind of like them too, in moderation, in a social setting. Some of the extreme ones are slightly disturbing. I suppose the real problem is that, despite trying a number of different things, I can't do them properly. I am having Sam Hober make me a tie with a piece of bailing wire in the lining. Maybe that will improve my opinion.

What about tassel loafers and point collars?

Tie is cashmere, hanky is silk. Suit is brown with a pale red and pale blue overcheck. Shirt is solid light blue.

This would look nice with a solid navy tie. This would be more flattering to the overall look and allow the suit and square to draw attention to the subtlety of pattern and color. Tie is too loud to be conservative business dress.

Bow ties have a regional distinction. More accepted in the south.

Pretty sure loafers aren't conservative business dress unless you work in an office where everyone walks in wearing basketball shorts.

Really?

I feel as if TSA screenings have made loafers perfectly acceptable business dress. On midweek and early morning flights you never see anyone in laceups anymore.

I don't disagree with this, nor would I abide by the "no loafers" if I wanted to wear them one day. I just think people that want true conservative business dress would say to put on captoes at some point before/after entering the office.

Thank you.

Remember, this is 7 continent conservative business dress. That said, bow ties in the Bay Area are associated with bean pies, so there you go.

Moo's outfit, with the tie in the same color family with the suit, is not loud at all; it's pretty tame. And it's only at close glance that the different color overlaying checks can be seen.

More than anything else, it's pleasing to the eye.

Granted, it's not a worsted suit and silk tie, and there's no grey to be seen, but in today's conservative business dress, I would wager that's it's far less offensive than shiny clown vomit ties or overly matchy accessories.

Thoughts, Manton?
