I wear navy ties with navy suits a bit. They are never exactly the same shade, so I think that's okay. For instance, I have a vintage Italian silk knit tie which is useful with a navy suit. It's darker than most of my suits and it has a really knobbly texture.

But seriously, non tone-on-tone is just a personal preference; what works best for me.

Love navy knit ties BTW.

I'm a huge fan of navy. Love to combine it with shades of grey, purple and brown, and light blue of course. Sometimes with orange too.

Actually right now I'm wearing a purple turtleneck sweater, navy trousers and socks, and espresso brown wholecuts.
