lol. OP wants to "branch out". On that note, I would also like to add that some of Against Me!'s earliest work (Tom's Demo through to The Disco Before the Breakdown) contains some great songwriting. Try the Acoustic EP for a taste.

Townes van Zandt...love him. Also jeff buckley, rodney crowell, and yeah, brandon flowers solo stuff was quite good.

you also cant go wrong with calssic country. SOme old george jones always strikes my fancy.

the only ones I have to add to the already-mentioned are:

Robert Earl Keen (but I could be biased) - he's hit-and-miss, but I quite like Gravitational Forces
Aimee Mann - pretty much anything she put out post-2000 is solid, though she writes a LOT of melancholy stuff. I need some sunlight and vitamin C when I've been listening to her too long.
