I agree that black is flattering in a lot of ways, it just seems a little more demanding of what it is paired with compared to, say, blue, brown or grey.
I think the contra-classical design of the blazer is neat, it just looks more intergrated if that same theme is repeated elsewhere in the outfit. It sounds like that is the direction you want to take anyway.
