That look is very Dublin hipster and has been for a while. In fact that could be two of my mates.

First, the hype about new balance sneakers is being seriously overstated. Who's pushing NBs besides Gilt, who is selling almost exclusively late-model running shoes and not the ones favored by the handful of posters defending them? I guess they've appeared in a couple lookbooks but I don't think there's a real NB revival brewing

Secondly, As SBobo said, NBs have always had favor with sneaker set. I also agree that the new 993s are not the prettiest models.

Thirdly, without pulling the heritage card (and really, I'm not), it's also closed minded to look only at the aesthetics of these things without considering the context. Does everything you like to wear adhere to some specific design sense or perfect ratio BS? Or do you wear some stuff despite, or even because of, its offness, or because of some other appeal (it reminds you of good times you had, or a subculture you identify with; marks you as belonging, or differentiates you, etc.)?

I say yay to anything if you can pull it off.

A little late to this discussion, but NB has as much cachet as Vans, if not more. When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s (ahem), NB's were only worn by the rich kids b/c they were so expensive vs. Nike/Adidas.

NB's "real" running shoes fit me really well. Currently have a pair of 770s or whatever the mid-range # is these days.
