Indianapolis

I am considering a job that will move me to Indianapolis. I am looking for advice on where to live. I have 2 kids and a wife so I am looking for things like good schools, access to good doctors/hospitals, recreation, etc. I am looking at the area north of Indianapolis because it appears there is some good shopping and things to do. Carmel is one of the places I am considering. Anyone have any thoughts on Carmel or other cities for that matter? One issues I see with Carmel is it appears to be at it's peak as far as property values. I would not mind finding an "up and comer" where we would be getting in before the boom.

Another drawback of Carmel is size. I would prefer a town with a population of 20-30k. This would make the school size a little smaller. I would rather not have my kids in a school where there are 1000+ kids in every grade.

couple other threads about naptown but Ill give you my $0.02. I grew up on the southside (greenwood area) and lived there until '04ish. Still visit yearly and its growing like crazy. Not really the good kind of growth though. Its mainly the 120k crackerbox house neighborhoods. There are good schools, no trouble, pretty quiet life.

Indy is a great town for a young family - not so much as a single guy, but its much better than it was (Hell, arcade fire is playing there this spring!!!).

There is plenty to do to keep you occupied and provide a quiet life. People are good and its consistently ranked one of the finest cities in the nation for cost of living and overall quality of life. People like to lump it in with cincy and detroit and cleveland and that couldnt be further from the truth.

I rarely went north of the broad ripple area, but I think most people will recommend the Carmel and Fishers area on the northside. Upscale suburbs. Actually almost anyplace north of indy is just fine. No clue on home prices, but I know all my buddies can afford houses up there and do live there.

Had to google "Naptown." I did search for other threads but all I found were threads on the night life or the ever popular I am taking a trip to Indy what should I do? I did not find anything on living there.

From what I have read so far Fishers seems descent but it seems like a poor mans or want to be Carmel. Unfortunately, I can only go on what I read, since I do not know any different.

Where are all the Indianapolis folks??

are you going to visit there before hand or just move blindly? Where you coming from?

For a family with kids in school, I recommend Carmel or any of the areas north of the city.

At this point it looks like I will need to find some temporary housing for the next 3-4 months. I may not be moving permanently until Spring of 2012 now. It is a fluid situation.

I am coming from a city west of Akron, Ohio.

^^^This will provide the opportunity to look around and get to know Indy before you move permanently. There are lots of nice areas, and they're not all on the northside although most are.
